With my previous warden's permission I've been working on maintaining the gym. How's that for a meeting place?

I've never had to deal with any major incidents there, although the Admiral apparently believes we can't be trusted to lift weights.

He also seems to believe that group showers without supervision are a good idea. Nothin's happened since I've been here, but when I was in the pen that was just asking for trouble.

Anyway, I'll be there in twenty minutes.

[And she's in the gym not ten minutes later, responsibly buffing up a few anchored-down exercise machines with a towel. She keeps an eye out for Jeryline, though, having resolved to be polite.]

[Jeryline shows up in her denim tuxedo and her hands in her pockets, looking around the gym oddly.]

You been doin' anything else besides this you wanna keep with? 'Cause I'll be honest? I know they need help but I fuckin' hated having that hangin' over my head in work release.

What were you inside for? [She drapes the towel over the machine's frame and turns to face the younger woman, greeting her with a slight nod of the head. She won't say a thing about the denim.]

Just biding my time for the most part. This place isn't what I'm really concerned about.

Stealin'. [And then a slight shrug, the look on her face saying that the crime didn't deserve the penalty.]

Were any of the people you worked with ever in? [She would guess not, because they seem like the types that would be killed before they could talk. But it's worth asking.]

Stealing what? [She shrugs back, guessing it'd be something fairly basic – modest amounts of cash or credit, maybe, or a major stash of retail material. Jeryline doesn't seem like the sort to go for the gusto in criminal circumstances. Perhaps drugs, to raise a hefty profit. In any case, she won't judge.]

Not for more than a couple of months as kids. [By which she mostly means her as a preteen.] At least, the ones I worked closely with.

Electronics. [She admits.] I was a street kid. Out on my own, sleepin' where I could. You know how tryin' to make ends meet goes.

[Though Jeryline never quite got desperate enough to kill people.]

[It may not have been desperation. As much as she'd hate to admit it, perhaps it was eagerness.]

Nearly a year. You might say that the penal system had me at a disadvantage 'cause I fit a certain type- [she motions at her face] -and they were all up in arms over gang shit at the time. Like bein' on the street meant you had to be in a gang and if you were in a gang you probably killed somebody and they had to keep you in long enough to be sure.

[Her tone incredulous all the way through the story, but she rolls her eyes finally.] Anyway, work release after that. Work release boss got her arm torn off in front of me. Demon hunting after that.

[She considers her life pretty succinct. However, she reconsiders her last statement with a funny look.] Okay, more runnin' from Demons and killin' them when they catch up to me. Which is almost hunting.

Christ. [It's not even worth explaining what bit she's responding to, it sounds like Hell on earth all around.]

What made you start with the demon stuff?

Guy showed up. Grizzly. Wearin' leather. Actually pretty hot come to think of it. [That's a strange thought to have with his memories in her head.] Then the demon showed up. Hot but also one of those guys you just knew was bad news? By the next morning I was the only one in the hotel left alive because of some predestination bullshit.

... Look, would you like to sit down? [She gestures toward a padded mat spread out on the ground for gymnastics or wrestling.]

Does anybody ever actually use exercycles? [She says offhandedly as she goes ahead and plops her butt inelegantly on a mat.] What about you. You got in with anybody you liked since you got to the Barge or caught trouble you didn't want?

[Going over to sit opposite her, Bea crosses her arms over her chest and sits down, sizing Jeryline up.] Why do you ask?

Because if someone wants to start somethin', I want to know if there's gonna be somethin'. I know you can take care of yourself, but the fact that you've had to for a real long time doesn't mean it's the only way it's gotta be. [She motions between the two of them.

Jeryline's size, by the by, is nearly a foot shorter than Beatrix. However, she talks like she's twice her size.]

Doesn't matter if it's necessary. It's like when your grandma gives you an ugly ass sweater for Christmas. Those of us that had a shortage in ugly ass sweaters could use all the other sentiments that came with it. They're just somethin' that somebody wants you to have whether you'll wear it or not to remind you that day of the year you were with 'em.

You don't need my help? But right now I'm givin' it to you anyway and you can decide if you want to keep it later.

You see, there's seven of these. I'm guardin' the last one from the demons I mentioned. They've gathered the other six, and if they get the Seventh the Formless Void bullshit happens all over again.

So I graduate you, the other six keys get split up. They're shit out of luck all over again.
