[As the feed flashes on Beatrix looks at the camera head-on, head slightly tilted and her lips in a thin line. She's sequestered in her cabin and looks tired but is steely-eyed as ever, emotion shoved far out of the way. There are more important things to get to.] How bad was it for you? Any damage done? [No mention of her public and sadistic threat. She doesn't see why it would be an issue.]

[Locked to Kon and Steph]
Tell me what happened to you. Please say you're all right.

[Locked to Arya]
Check in. Were you harmed or sent to Zero during the takeover?

[Locked to Ben]
Do I assume correctly in guessing we need to talk?

[Locked to Chris]
... Jesus fuck. [Enough said.]

[Locked to Riddick and Slade]
[Beatrix had threatened the partial truth out of Narvin easily enough, although he'd said nothing to incriminate either of them. Still, she has a sneaking suspicion they were playing her. There's still respect for both of them there, but she is Not Amused. Flatly, face and eyes blank:] Go ahead. Whatever you're going to say, say it.

[Locked to Narvin]
You're a son of a bitch, you know that? [She glares at the camera, but her tone's more resigned and annoyed than malicious.] How's the eye?

It has been noted in the past. Often.

[He reaches up to touch the bruise. He's just glad that a bruise is all he got.]

It will heal.

[Narvin has been punched by so many of his fellow wardens during his time here that it doesn't even register as a Zero-worthy offense.]

She was joined to the ship. Having that link broken suddenly through traumatic death could have been disastrous. She had to be unlinked first, otherwise we could have ended up facing anything from the continuation of erratic conditions with no way to reinstate the Admiral, to the physical dissolution of the entire ship. It wasn't a risk I wanted to take.

I'm not so pure-hearted that I'm wholly against assassination. But only if it serves a practical purpose, if it saves lives that can't be saved by other means.

The trap wasn't directed at you specifically, any number of people might have answered my call. It was easier at the time to simply carry on a deception, especially since there wasn't any way to prove that any explanation I might have given wasn't itself a trick. I frequently find that when I explain things honestly, people assume that I'm lying anyway.

[Probably because he does things like this.]

She should suffer because we suffered, you mean?

If she were from my world, she'd be dragged before an inquisitor and put on trial. Gross negligence. Reckless endangerment. Unlawful incarceration. Torture. Impersonating a cosmic entity. They'd never let her touch a piece of advanced equipment again, and probably remove her knowledge of advanced technology from her mind.

But she isn't from my world, and the Admiral has decided that demotion is punishment enough.

Honestly, I was expecting more. Dr. Lewis, perhaps. But even when it was just you I couldn't take the risk that you wouldn't believe me if I said that Miss Sato shouldn't be killed.

[Narvin can be vindictive, but where he's from revenge usually means humiliating your enemies and casting them out of power, not killing them.]

How Hammurabian. One death for each person killed by the Barge while it was under her control?

[He's suddenly reminded of Leela, who was so determined to see a murderer receive justice and die regardless of what it cost her.]

I appreciate your desire for justice, but I'm a pragmatist first and foremost. And as far as I can see, Miss Sato's death now won't benefit the ship. She'll suffer, she'll death toll, and nothing will change. Meanwhile, killing her will cause trouble for you, your warden, and whatever unfortunate is assigned to be Miss Sato's warden.

I don't think you do, any more than I truly understand your reasoning. [He shrugs one shoulder.] We're operating from completely different ideological frameworks, I think.

Right now Miss Sato probably wouldn't even fight you.

Likewise. I have a...[Friend? Yes, friend.]...friend back home who would probably agree with your point of view. And I respect her a great deal, even though I disagree with her on many things.

I know that you want justice. And Miss Sato may indeed deserve to suffer. But I can't condone it. Not like this. If she were condemned by a jury, that would be different.
