[The screen switches on, revealing a face caked in dirt, covered in dust, streaked with sweat, and smeared with blood. A pair of troubled, if clear, blue eyes look out from it, and then there's a shake of the head, followed by a swirl of long, messy blonde hair – underneath all the grime, the new arrival's a female. She gives a bright smile, the sight slightly disarming on such a gritty face.]

Hi. [Her voice cracks when she speaks and she coughs, then clears her throat.]

Sorry to bother you folks, but it appears I've got some new business to attend to and I'm a little out of sorts. [Her smile turns apologetic, a little self-deprecating. It might be cute if she didn't look like an adult female approximation of Peanuts' Pigpen.] If one of you would be so kind as to point me toward the showers, I'd be in your debt.

[One last thing: her voice lowers, the sparkle gone from her eyes.] Budd... If you're here, I'll find you.

What's wrong with my name?

About a year. I...it usually takes between eight and fifteen months for most people to graduate. Bunches of us stay on to work though. For all the weirdness and risk, there are a lot of perks to this place.

[An embarrassed little laugh.] Yeah, well, I got kidnapped by my boyfriend once before I was properly trained. My Warden asked for a dog for me. But the Admiral decided I needed to train him and myself so we would be a team, and gave me a puppy.

[The door rattles on its hinges.]

So now he's a well trained dog...though he's also a big friendly derp when he's off duty.

[Hoffman just kind of stares for a moment]

You uh-did you get somebody to get you some bath...stuff?

You want some new clothes too?

[What is it with unusual people showing up lately.]

[ Before she can think the words come out. ] GODS! Are you hurt? [ She seems fine enough, but under all of that dirt.. .]

You said usually. In my experience people don't reform that quickly, if they do at all. There's got to be a few hangers-on who've stayed well past that date, aren't there? [Because she doubts she's going to be that quick a study.

B laughs as the dog rattles the door, managing to look a lot more at ease than she really is on the barge.] Very big, by the sound of it. Fozzie Bear, huh?

It's a little twee, that's all. Paying homage?

[The staring's already getting old. She's definitely not turning the commlink on for a while after she cleans up.] Yes. Someone already offered a hand, but thanks for asking. [She pauses, looking downward.] Although I could use a new pair of shoes.

[That concern catches her by surprise, and for the first time in a long while she laughs. Genuinely.] No. I'm fine, thank you. [The worst she's got to deal with right now are the wounds from the rock salt blast to the chest and her skinned knuckles. Flesh wounds don't count as injuries.]

[That 'twee' just gets a blank stare.]

No. Not paying homage.

Just coincidentally named Steve Rogers. No relation to the most famous bearer of that name.

[Audio or text is your friend. Hoffman frowns] Size?

What level are you on? [Hoffman's tone is brisk now. Businesslike.] I can come to you if you'd prefer or you can meet me in the dining hall.

[pause] ...That didn't happen to you on the damn boat did it? Somebody shoving you into the dirt?

...Assuming you mean Captain America, miss, I'd say I'm ...pretty closely related to him.

Level 4, I was just about to hose off. Drop in if you're nearby.

[She smiles, slow and bitter.] This? No, no. I just had myself a Texas funeral, courtesy of an old friend.

Bullshit.

...I want to say something about Texas being really backward, but I don't want to say anything against your friend. [It doesn't sound particularly friendly. Hence the backward comment.]

I'll meet you there. Converse Ok? [Those seem ~~Tarantino-esque~~]

No offense taken, backward's a pretty good way to say it. [Friend's a bit of an exaggeration. O-Ren had been an old friend. Budd was just Bill's brother, another ex-coworker on her hit list. Still, that's a story for another time.]

Fine by me. [They'll go with her jumpsuit!]

Some people get touchy about their states. I still sometimes feel that way about home. You need a doctor to look you over?

Yeah, well, Texas isn't mine. [She gives a wry smile.] I'm not dead yet, right? No harm done.

[Amused. And then out of nowhere.] Cherish your life. All you really can do.

[Something about that makes him frown but he shakes his head. In the distance-of where-ever she is there's a big man in a rumpled suit with an untied-tie coming. There's a big box in his hands.]

I do, yeah.

Looking like they were run over by a truck you what? [She arches an eyebrow; her voice has that dare-you-to-tell-me edge to it.]

Wise words. [And good advice, at least for other people. At present she hasn't got that much worth living for. Now that her baby girl was gone, the only thing left was taking care of unfinished business. That, and this bullshit.

The wounds she's acquired aren't really enough to warrant a doctor, in her opinion. She'd just have to wash and slap some rubbing alcohol on her knuckles, and hopefully the rock salt in her chest sanitized as much as it stung. She's got it together by the time he nears her, cool and half-smiling despite her messy state.]
