[The screen switches on, revealing a face caked in dirt, covered in dust, streaked with sweat, and smeared with blood. A pair of troubled, if clear, blue eyes look out from it, and then there's a shake of the head, followed by a swirl of long, messy blonde hair – underneath all the grime, the new arrival's a female. She gives a bright smile, the sight slightly disarming on such a gritty face.]

Hi. [Her voice cracks when she speaks and she coughs, then clears her throat.]

Sorry to bother you folks, but it appears I've got some new business to attend to and I'm a little out of sorts. [Her smile turns apologetic, a little self-deprecating. It might be cute if she didn't look like an adult female approximation of Peanuts' Pigpen.] If one of you would be so kind as to point me toward the showers, I'd be in your debt.

[One last thing: her voice lowers, the sparkle gone from her eyes.] Budd... If you're here, I'll find you.

It's been a hell of a month. [Well. That's a woman. And gosh she's dirty.] I was attacked, and now two more people show up beaten and bruised.

[He extends the box and offers her a hand] Mark Hoffman. Warden.

Don't doubt it, if I'm the second girl who's stumbled in in this state. Mind if I ask what happened?

[She takes the box gratefully, tensing almost imperceptibly as she takes his hand. A Warden. Just what she needed.] Beth Solberg. New arrival.

See, that was an invitation to prove it.

Alright. [And so that camera is getting flipped around, and hey, look! There's that shield.]

I don't know. She showed up looking like she'd been in a fight. I- [Hoffman shrugged] when I showed up I was ranting and raving and half-starved but I hadn't been...bludgeoned or buried to death. Her name was Natalie.

Nobody's really responsible for anybody else until a warden's assigned to them. This place is dangerous.

Shoes okay?

[She blinks then turns her own camera away for a second, taking the opportunity to bite her lip in amusement. Captain fucking America. When they said from different places, they hadn't been fucking around. Sobering, she turns the camera back to her face and clears her throat.] Sorry about that.

Nothing so weird about that, maybe she had been. Did she pull through or is there a reason you're talking about her past-tense?

Well, I can assure you I'll keep to myself and be all right. How quickly do wardens tend to be assigned?

[Lifting the lid, she grabs one of the shoes and lifts her foot, holding the soles together.] They'll fit, that's good enough for me.

I haven't checked in on her again but she seemed okay. I just-

[He looks flustered for a moment] Depends. I was an inmate-I've been a warden now for 3 months. My-

Another one, inmate turned warden assigned right away. It depends. Most people just build alliances or so it seems. I've become kind of disconnected from it.

[His lip curls upward and his scar twitches.]You're welcome. Have you checked your cabin?

Are you all right? [He's clearly struggling to tell his story and to be honest, Beatrix doesn't care. The interest is only for appearance, except for the parts that concern her.] How long were you an inmate?

I – not yet. I was focusing on the shower first.

It's okay. I'm used to it.

[...hooray for helpfulness? Even if the intentions aren't entirely pure.]

So...not. He have something to do with you being here, then?

Yeah, there are. People like Arthas, and Reaver, and Crane. Arthas is even kind of a friend, but there's this side to him that...yeah. [Her glance cuts away for a second.]

Anyway, some of us need to do more to reform than others. Me, I'm uh...well, I need longer because I have a problem most people don't have to deal with. But once you get past a certain stage it gets shitloads easier.

[The door rattles, and there's an audible thud as the dog beyond flops over onto his back dramatically and rrooowwwls.]

[Wanda giggles.] Um, yeah, I'm a Muppets fan.

I'm guessing it does. Not that I got drawn in just for the bath, mind you.

Ah, let me guess. What's coming next is a warning to stay away from them, right?

Ain't that the truth. [If she hadn't seen so many younger women build up so many lists of victims, she'd ask what Wanda had done to warrant staying longer. As it is, it's none of her business.] And what stage is that, exactly?

I think we all are. Electric Mayhem was always my favorite.

[Don't mind him, he's just...taking a minute to process that. Maybe a couple minutes. He looks a shade or two more vacant than before, but it's not quite the thousand mile stare she'd get usually.

[Shit. Any mirth on her face immediately drops off and she goes stony, snapping her fingers to get him out of his reverie.] Hey. Space cadet, Houston has a problem. Are you telling me I didn't survive what I just went through?

[A blink. He's here! It's fine. He's done.

[For a long moment all she does is stare, and there's something very dangerous in the look.]

...Fuck!

[The faintest of flinches.]

You can go back though? Eventually. Apparently.

[He doesn't really seem to believe this himself though, he's just parroting.]

Eventually's not going to do me a hell of a lot of good, is it? [The doubt is tangible, and Beatrix accepts it wholeheartedly. Shit. The one thing she had left to do and she fucking failed at it. Due to Budd of all fucking people. Way to add insult to injury.]

No, you go back when you came from. At least, that's what they say.

Nah, I'm sure you know how to take care of your business. Arthas is moody and unstable but can be awesome, and Crane and Reaver are both trolls. Richie is a creeper but seems to be starting to calm down. Perry's just an asshole, but he's honest about it.

[She shrugs.] It's hard to describe. For me a bunch of it was this moment when I realized that the benefits of being here and working toward a second chance sure as hell beat being dead.

[A laugh. Fozzie scratches once at the door.] Aaaaanimaaall. Although the circle I run in involves at least one dude who actually looks like a Muppet.

Thanks for the warning, I'll watch my back. Anyone else I should know about?

Ah, the moment of conversion. Hope no one's holding their breath on that one. [She's not dead. She hopes to God she's not, that Budd's rustic little torture hadn't killed her. Not now.

Not that it matters now. She pushes the thought aside and focuses on the conversation and Fozzie's scratching, laughing a little.] He's persistent. Is your friend a dead ringer for any muppet in particular or is he his own creature?

Do they give you a reason to believe that? It sure as hell sounds like you don't.

They don't give you an alternative. It's either do your time here and go home, or...nothing. Stay dead forever, I guess.

[A shrug; he knows he doesn't want to be HERE, but he doesn't have anything else to believe.]
